Description

Arran Victory was bred on the Isle of Arran and introduced in 1918, its name marking the end of the First World War. It remains one of the most distinctive British heritage potatoes: oval tubers have vivid blue-purple skin that fades during cooking, while the flesh is strikingly white and distinctly floury.

Its dry texture and traditional potato flavour make it particularly good for roast potatoes, mash, baking and chips. The plants can grow comparatively tall, so a reasonably sheltered position is useful. It is not a modern disease-resistance variety; the reason to grow Arran Victory is flavour, heritage and that unmistakable blue skin.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Allow it a full maincrop season. Earth up well to keep developing tubers covered, and lift carefully once the haulm has died back and skins have set.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
