Foxton Seed Potatoes

From £6.99

A Northern Irish red-skinned maincrop producing high yields of attractive, uniform tubers with lemon-yellow flesh and genuinely broad kitchen versatility.

Description

Foxton is a British-bred variety with Maris Piper in its pedigree and has long been valued locally as a handsome, high-yielding table potato. The tubers range from short oval to long oval, with smooth red skin and yellow to lemon-coloured flesh.

It is unusually versatile: it boils without excessive discolouration, makes strong bakers and roast potatoes, and is also suitable for chips and crisps. Your original Patch notes that it responds well to irrigation and has useful resistance to several storage and soil-borne problems. Those practical observations are worth retaining because they explain why Foxton has performed well in commercial and garden crops.

Why grow Foxton?

  • Maturity: Maincrop
  • Cooking type: Slightly Waxy
  • Texture: Balanced, creamy and moderately firm
  • Best for: Baking, Boiling, Chipping, Crisping, Mashing, Roasting, Sautéing
  • Skin: Red
  • Flesh: Yellow / lemon
  • Tuber shape: Oval to long oval

Growing note: Maintain moisture during bulking for the most even crop. Give the plants sufficient spacing because Foxton can yield heavily.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Maintain moisture during bulking for the most even crop. Give the plants sufficient spacing because Foxton can yield heavily.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
