Description

Navan was bred by the Northern Ireland Plant Breeding Station from a cross that included Maris Piper, with frying quality very much part of its purpose. It produces large, uniform oval tubers with white to buff skin, shallow eyes and cream flesh.

For home growers, the standout is its frying performance: high dry matter and very good fry colour make Navan an excellent choice for chips, while the semi-mealy flesh also bakes well. It is high yielding, has a long dormancy and good storage ability, and official variety descriptions note useful heat and drought tolerance. Tubers can be susceptible to bruising, so handle the crop carefully at lifting.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Give Navan adequate spacing for its large crop and avoid rough handling at harvest. Let skins set fully before lifting potatoes intended for storage.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
