Description

Purple Rain is grown for its intensely coloured skin and flesh, but it has useful eating quality as well. The long oval tubers have dark purple skin and violet-purple flesh, with a firm texture and delicate, slightly sweet flavour. The pigment is naturally occurring anthocyanin; colour generally holds well during cooking, particularly when the skin is retained.

It can be boiled or steamed, but it also makes dramatic chips and mash. Specialist grower information notes good keeping quality. Under heat, drought, irregular watering or very early harvest, the flesh can sometimes appear marbled purple and white rather than uniformly dark—useful information for growers so they know this is physiological variation rather than the wrong variety.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March into April once soil conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Keep water supply reasonably even during tuber development. For the strongest flesh colour, allow tubers to mature and cook with the skin on where practical.

Harvest: Begin checking from early to mid-summer, depending on planting date and conditions.
