Description

Rosegarden comes from the Northern Ireland Plant Breeding Station, from Barna × Maris Piper. It produces attractive oval to long-oval tubers with red skin, shallow eyes and cream flesh. With dry matter around 21.5% and a BC cooking type, it gives a pleasingly mealy texture without being as extremely floury as some heritage maincrops.

It is suitable for fresh eating and chips. Independent variety information records useful resistance to blackleg, dry rot and gangrene, but also relatively weak foliage-blight resistance, so the old description's broad disease-resistance language needs qualification.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Grow as an early-to-maincrop type and monitor foliage where blight pressure is high. The combination of red skin, creamy flesh and medium-high dry matter is the main reason to choose it.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
