Description

British Queen is one of the great traditional potatoes of Ireland and Britain. Bred more than a century ago, it produces uniform oval tubers with white skin and white flesh, and is valued for the high dry matter and pronounced floury texture that give it its characteristic old-fashioned potato flavour.

It is especially good boiled in the skin, steamed or mashed, and also roasts well. British Queen holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Unlike waxy salad potatoes, it can break up if aggressively boiled, so gentle cooking or steaming is the best way to preserve both texture and flavour.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March into April once soil conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: As a Second Early, plant from March into April and begin checking from early summer. Keep moisture reasonably even while tubers are swelling for the most uniform crop.

Harvest: Begin checking from early to mid-summer, depending on planting date and conditions.
