Description

Kerr's Pink began as 'Henry's Seedling', bred in Scotland in 1907, but became deeply established in Ireland from the early twentieth century and remains particularly popular in the west. Its short-oval tubers have characteristic pink skin and relatively deep eyes, with white to creamy flesh.

This is a genuinely floury potato: simply boiled in its skin, steamed or mashed, it delivers the dry texture and strong potato flavour many Irish growers prize. It can also chip well. Disease resistance is not its main strength—late blight can be a problem—so its place in the range is about flavour and tradition rather than low-input growing.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Grow as a full maincrop and give the crop time to mature. For storage, lift in dry conditions where possible, cure the skins and check stored tubers regularly.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
