Description

Ramos is very much a grower's and processor's potato: it is bred to make a strong crop of large oval to long-oval tubers with yellow skin, light yellow flesh and the dry matter needed for good frying. That commercial background is useful to home growers too, because it translates into big, practical potatoes for chips and baking.

It is not a boutique salad variety; its strength is productive, large-tuber performance and dependable kitchen use. The flesh is particularly suited to chips and wedges, with roasting and baking also good uses. Give it enough space and moisture during bulking if you want the larger tubers this variety is capable of producing.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Plant as a maincrop and avoid crowding. Consistent moisture during tuber bulking helps size the crop evenly.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
