Francis Seed Potatoes

From £6.99

A very early First Early with long white-skinned tubers and unusually early dry-matter development, giving useful frying quality as well as general kitchen versatility.

Description

Francis is a very early First Early variety valued for producing useful yields earlier than many comparable varieties. The long to long-oval tubers have white skin and light yellow flesh.

Its standout feature for such an early potato is its dry-matter development. Francis can achieve useful frying quality early in the season, making it an unusual First Early choice for home chips or early French fries as well as general kitchen use. Pre-sprouting can help push the crop for an especially early harvest.

Why grow Francis?

  • Maturity: First Early

  • Texture: Balanced, creamy and slightly floury
  • Best for: Baking, Boiling, Chipping, Mashing, Roasting

Growing note: Chit or pre-sprout for the earliest crop. If you want larger frying potatoes rather than small new potatoes, allow the crop a little extra time to bulk.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March onwards once the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Chit or pre-sprout for the earliest crop. If you want larger frying potatoes rather than small new potatoes, allow the crop a little extra time to bulk.

Harvest: Begin checking from early summer; lift progressively when the tubers reach the size you want.
