Description

Vitanoire is one of the most technically interesting coloured potatoes in the Patch range. Plantera describes it as an early, firm-cooking variety with purple skin and purple flesh, oval tubers and excellent taste. Its dry matter is around 19.7%, high enough to give useful frying quality despite its firm cooking type.

The standout agronomic feature is late-blight resistance: Plantera scores both foliage and tuber resistance at 9, alongside useful resistance to scab, powdery scab and fusarium. The purple colour comes from naturally occurring anthocyanin pigments. Vitanoire is therefore not just a novelty potato; it combines unusual colour with strong disease resilience and good eating quality.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March onwards once the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Plantera notes that pre-sprouting is not essential and that the variety suits a range of soil types, but good nutrition is important for strong growth.

Harvest: Begin checking from early summer; lift progressively when the tubers reach the size you want.
