Organic Alouette Seed Potatoes

From £7.99

Certified organic Alouette: a red-skinned early-maincrop with yellow flesh, strong foliage and tuber blight resistance, drought tolerance and excellent fresh-market eating quality.

Description

Alouette is an Agrico Next Generation variety bred to combine attractive table quality with serious disease resilience. It develops relatively large, regular long-oval tubers with deep red skin, shallow eyes and yellow flesh.

Unlike the very floury Sarpo maincrops, Alouette is a firmer AB cooking type, so it boils and steams well while still being useful roasted, baked or chipped. Agrico records strong late-blight resistance in both foliage and tubers, good drought tolerance and useful resistance to PCN and wart disease. That makes it a particularly strong fit for organic growing.

Why grow Alouette?

  • Maturity: Early Maincrop
  • Cooking type: Slightly Waxy
  • Texture: Fairly firm, creamy and versatile
  • Best for: Baking, Boiling, Chipping, Mashing, Roasting
  • Skin: Deep red
  • Flesh: Yellow
  • Tuber shape: Long oval

Growing note: Rapid early foliage development helps the crop establish quickly. Give it enough moisture during tuber bulking, but its drought tolerance makes it more forgiving than many table varieties.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Rapid early foliage development helps the crop establish quickly. Give it enough moisture during tuber bulking, but its drought tolerance makes it more forgiving than many table varieties.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
