Sherman Seed Potatoes

From £6.99

A Plantera baker variety producing a high proportion of large round-oval tubers, excellent flavour, strong tuber-blight resistance and high yield potential.

Description

Sherman was selected with baking potatoes in mind. Plantera describes it as a mid-early variety with excellent taste and a high percentage of big, round-oval tubers, while Branston trials report very high baker yields. The skin and flesh are both light yellow and the cooking type is fairly firm rather than floury.

For home growers, the key is size management: Sherman can make genuinely large jacket potatoes, but the crop should be monitored so tubers do not become oversized. Current Plantera information gives strong tuber-blight resistance and good common-scab resistance, though foliage-blight resistance is only moderate.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Give Sherman adequate spacing and begin checking tuber size rather than simply waiting as long as possible. Its high yield of large tubers is the feature to manage and exploit.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
