Tulipa tarda Bulbs

Low-growing but wonderfully generous, Tulipa tarda creates a carpet of bright, star-shaped flowers close to the ground. The blooms open wide in spring sunshine, revealing a vivid golden-yellow centre surrounded by clean white petal tips. Several flowers can appear on each short stem, giving this small botanical tulip far more presence than its height suggests.

Unlike many highly bred bedding tulips, Tulipa tarda is particularly well suited to long-term planting. Give it a sunny, freely drained position and it can settle in, return and gradually form broader colonies. It is a natural choice for gravel gardens, rockeries, raised beds and the front edge of borders, where its flowers will not be hidden by taller plants.

Planting Tulipa tarda

Plant from October to December in full sun, using fertile, humus-rich soil that drains freely. Set bulbs pointed end upwards, approximately 10–15cm deep and 10–15cm apart. Sharper drainage is particularly important in heavy soil and containers.

After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow completely before removing it. Established clumps are best left undisturbed so they can strengthen and spread. Flower numbers and timing may vary with local weather and growing conditions.

When & Where to Plant

Plant from October to December in full sun and fertile, humus-rich, freely drained soil. Tulipa tarda opens its star-shaped flowers most fully in sunshine and is ideal for rock gardens, gravel gardens, pots and naturalised drifts.

Spacing & Depth

Care & After Flowering

Water after planting if conditions are dry, but avoid winter waterlogging. Remove faded flowers if desired and allow the foliage to die back naturally. In a suitable well-drained site this botanical tulip can establish and multiply over time.
