Why choose the collection?

  • Three named varieties in one convenient order
  • A varied crop for cooking and storing
  • Each planted set can develop into a cluster of new shallots

Planting Advice

When and where to plant

Plant in early to mid-spring when the soil is workable and freely drained. Choose full sun and fertile soil improved ahead of planting with well-rotted organic matter. Avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.

Spacing and depth

  • Plant sets 15–20cm apart, leaving 25–30cm between rows.
  • Set each bulb with its pointed tip just showing above the surface.
  • Firm gently and check for sets displaced by birds.

Care

Keep weed-free and water in prolonged dry spells while the plants are growing. Allow room for each set to divide into a cluster. Reduce watering as the crop matures. Raised beds or large containers with drainage holes are useful where soil remains wet.

Harvest and storage

Lift in summer when foliage yellows and falls naturally; timing varies with planting date and growing conditions. Dry the clumps in a sheltered, airy place, then separate and store sound, thoroughly cured bulbs somewhere cool, dry and ventilated.

Before planting

On arrival, unpack and check the sets. Keep cool, dry and well ventilated until planting, checking regularly. Avoid sealed plastic bags and warm rooms. Request later dispatch in the order notes if you prefer delivery nearer planting time.
