Planting Advice
Planting and growing
Plant in early to mid-spring when soil is workable and freely drained; avoid frozen or waterlogged ground. On cold, wet sites, wait for suitable spring conditions or use raised beds. Delivery from December does not mean the sets must be planted outdoors straight away.
Choose full sun and fertile soil improved ahead of planting with well-rotted organic matter. Plant sets 15–20cm apart, allowing 25–30cm between rows, with the tip just showing. Each planted set can divide into a cluster, so leave space for the clump to develop. Firm gently and check for sets displaced by birds.
Keep weed-free and water in prolonged dry spells while the plants are growing. Avoid persistently wet soil and reduce watering as bulbs mature. Large containers with drainage holes are an alternative where ground is too wet; check them regularly for moisture.
Harvesting and storage
Harvest in summer when foliage yellows and falls naturally; timing varies with weather and planting date. Lift clumps carefully and dry thoroughly in a sheltered, airy place. Once cured, separate and store sound bulbs cool, dry and ventilated. No fixed number of harvested bulbs is guaranteed.
When your order arrives
Unpack and check the sets, then keep cool, dry and well ventilated until planting. Check regularly and avoid sealed plastic bags. If you prefer later dispatch, request it in the order notes.
