Planting Advice

Planting times for this collection

The four varieties have slightly different planting windows: Carcassonne Wight is normally planted October to December; Kingsland Wight can be planted in autumn or early spring but dislikes wet ground; Picardy Wight can be planted October to February, with December to late January given as the optimum; Maddock Wight is planted October to January, with October to December the optimum. The stated windows can vary with the season.

Prepare the bulbs

Separate each bulb into individual cloves just before planting. Leave the papery skins intact and plant the cloves pointed end up.

Where and how to plant

Choose a sunny position with fertile, free-draining soil. Place the clove tips about 2.5cm below the soil surface, spacing cloves around 15cm apart and rows about 30cm apart. Garlic dislikes waterlogged ground; use a raised bed or free-draining containers at least 25cm deep if needed.

Care, harvest and storage

Keep the bed weed-free and water during prolonged dry spells in spring and early summer while bulbs are swelling. Stop watering once bulbs are well formed and foliage begins to yellow. Remove flower stalks from Carcassonne Wight and Kingsland Wight as they appear. Harvest each variety when foliage has turned yellow, then lift carefully to avoid bruising. Dry bulbs in a single layer for two to four weeks in the sun or a dry, well-ventilated place before storing cool and dry.
