Kelly Seed Potatoes

From £6.99

A very high-yielding, high-dry-matter French-fry maincrop with exceptional foliage and tuber blight resistance and excellent frying quality even after long storage.

Description

Kelly is a modern maincrop from Germicopa bred with French-fry production in mind. It produces a high proportion of large long-oval tubers with cream skin, shallow eyes and white flesh. Dry matter is high at around 22–24%, giving the crop the texture and frying performance required for excellent chips.

Its other standout feature is disease resilience: Germicopa rates both foliage and tuber late-blight resistance as very high. The plants are vigorous with strong rooting, yields are high and fry quality remains excellent even after long storage. Common-scab resistance is relatively low, so it is important not to turn 'blight resistant' into a blanket claim of resistance to everything.

Why grow Kelly?

  • Maturity: Maincrop
  • Cooking type: Floury
  • Texture: Dry, floury and high dry matter
  • Best for: Baking, Chipping, Crisping, Mashing, Roasting
  • Skin: Cream
  • Flesh: White
  • Tuber shape: Long oval

Growing note: Give Kelly a full maincrop season and enough space for its large tubers. Cure carefully before storage; long-term keeping and retained fry quality are major strengths.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Give Kelly a full maincrop season and enough space for its large tubers. Cure carefully before storage; long-term keeping and retained fry quality are major strengths.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
