Description

Record is an old processing and table variety, introduced in the 1930s, with oval tubers, a slightly rough or netted cream-yellow skin and light yellow flesh. Its high dry matter is the defining feature: cooked tubers are dry and floury rather than waxy.

That makes Record particularly useful for crisps, chips and roasting, and explains its long-standing popularity in parts of Ireland. Official variety data records good resistance to powdery scab, splitting and spraing, but susceptibility to several other diseases, so it should not be marketed as broadly disease resistant.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 35–40cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Grow through a full maincrop season and handle mature tubers carefully. The dry texture is best exploited in frying and roasting rather than dishes that need a very firm waxy potato.

Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
