Description

Red Duke of York is a heritage First Early dating from 1942. The deep red skin and pale yellow flesh make it immediately recognisable, and RHS notes that it is generally more vigorous, produces larger tubers and is often preferred for flavour to the original Duke of York.

Lifted young it is excellent boiled or used as a salad potato; allowed to mature, the flesh becomes more floury and works well for roasting, baking and mash. Its disease resistance is relatively low, so this is a variety chosen for flavour, colour and early performance rather than for low-input disease protection.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March onwards once the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Chit for an early start and harvest progressively. Leave some plants longer if you want larger, more floury tubers rather than small new potatoes.

Harvest: Begin checking from early summer; lift progressively when the tubers reach the size you want.
