Description

Sharpe's Express is one of the classic early potatoes. Introduced in 1900, it produces smooth pale tubers that are oval to slightly pear-shaped, with shallow eyes and bright cream-white flesh. Its greatest strength is flavour: boiled or steamed whole in the skin, it delivers the traditional new-potato character that keeps heritage varieties relevant.

The flesh is floury enough to roast well too, and RHS recognises it as suitable for container growing. It is important not to repeat old claims of broad disease resistance: current variety data describes low resistance to late blight and several other diseases. Grow it because it is early and delicious, not because it is disease-proof.

Planting & Growing Sharpe’s Express

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March onwards once the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Chit carefully and plant for an early crop. It is an excellent candidate for bags or containers where early harvesting is the goal.

Harvest: Begin checking from early summer; lift progressively when the tubers reach the size you want.
