Planting Advice
Planting and growing
Plant in early to mid-spring, usually March–April, once soil is workable and no longer waterlogged or frozen. In mild areas suitable conditions may arrive earlier. December dispatch is not a recommendation to plant spring onion sets outdoors immediately.
Choose full sun and fertile, freely drained ground. Incorporate well-rotted organic matter ahead of planting; avoid fresh manure. Plant sets 10–15cm apart in rows 25–30cm apart, with the pointed tip just showing. Wider spacing allows more room for individual bulbs. Keep newly planted sets secure and replant any pulled up by birds.
Weed regularly by hand near the shallow roots. Water during prolonged dry weather while the crop is growing; containers need closer attention. Feed according to soil needs and the fertiliser label rather than applying excessive nitrogen. Remove any flower stems promptly and use affected bulbs first.
Harvesting and storage
Expect a summer to early-autumn harvest, depending on planting time and conditions. Lift as the foliage yellows and falls naturally. Cure in a dry, airy place until necks and skins are dry, then store sound bulbs somewhere cool, dry and ventilated. Use damaged, soft or thick-necked bulbs first.
When your order arrives
Open the parcel and check the sets. If planting later, keep them cool, dry and well ventilated, check regularly and avoid sealed plastic bags or warm living spaces. Ask us if you are unsure about holding them until your intended planting date.
