Description

Truffette is a modern purple potato selected for regular tuber shape and practical growing qualities as well as colour. The medium-sized oval tubers have vibrant purple skin and flesh, with naturally occurring anthocyanin pigment and a firm to fairly firm texture.

It is earlier and more regular than many old purple fingerling types, and specialist organic suppliers highlight good flavour, robustness and excellent storage. It works well boiled or steamed and can also make colourful mash or homemade crisps. It is not currently supported as a blight-resistant variety, so colour and storage—not disease claims—should lead the description.

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March into April once soil conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Grow as a Second Early to early-maincrop type and keep water supply reasonably even. Allow skins to set before storage to make the most of its keeping quality.

Harvest: Begin checking from early to mid-summer, depending on planting date and conditions.
