Kestrel Seed Potatoes

From £6.99

A high-yielding Second Early with distinctive purple-blue eye markings, excellent flavour, good performance in heavy soils and useful resistance to slugs and bruising.

Description

Kestrel is one of the more distinctive modern Second Earlies. Smooth cream skin is splashed with purple-blue around the shallow eyes, while the creamy-yellow flesh has enough body to work for boiling, mash, roasting, baking and chips.

RHS highlights qualities that matter to gardeners: Kestrel crops well, performs in heavy soils, tolerates dry conditions and shows good resistance to blackleg, potato virus, slugs and bruising. That combination of appearance, flavour and garden resilience is a much stronger reason to choose it than simply calling it an all-rounder.

Why grow Kestrel?

Planting & Growing

Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March into April once soil conditions are suitable.

Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.

Variety-specific advice: Plant from March into April and keep an even water supply where possible. Its resistance to slug damage makes it particularly interesting on sites where other varieties have suffered underground pest damage.

Harvest: Begin checking from early to mid-summer, depending on planting date and conditions.
