Longor Shallot Sets

Longor is an RHS Award of Garden Merit French banana-type shallot, producing the elongated bulbs that make this style so distinctive in the kitchen. Mature bulbs have purple-brown outer skins and attractive pink flesh, with a fine shallot flavour suited to sauces, roasting and everyday cooking.

Planting Advice

When & Where to Plant

Plant from late winter into spring in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Spacing & Depth

  • Plant sets 15–20cm apart, with about 30cm between rows.
  • Set them with the tip just showing above the surface.

Care

Keep weed-free and water during prolonged dry spells. Each planted set develops into a cluster of new shallots.

Heavy Soil & Containers

Good drainage is essential. Raised beds and large containers are useful on heavier soils.

Harvest & Storage

Lift when the foliage yellows and falls. Separate the clusters and cure the bulbs thoroughly. Store only sound, dry shallots in a cool, airy place.
