Description
Elephant Garlic Cloves
Elephant Garlic is a cult classic among home growers, producing enormous bulbs with a small number of impressively large cloves. The flavour is much milder than traditional garlic, making it especially good for roasting whole or using where you want a gentler garlic character.
Despite the name, Elephant Garlic is more closely related to the leek. It is grown in much the same way as garlic but needs more space and a long growing season to develop its spectacular bulbs.

Planting Advice
When & Where to Plant
Elephant Garlic needs a long growing season and is best planted in autumn, ideally around October. Spring planting is possible but may produce a smaller crop. Choose full sun and fertile, free-draining soil.
Spacing & Depth
- Plant root end down and pointed end up.
- Allow around 20–25cm between plants so the very large bulbs have room to develop.
- Cover the clove well, with the tip several centimetres below the soil surface.
Heavy Soil & Containers
Use a raised bed or large, well-drained container where winter soil is heavy or wet.
Harvest & Storage
Lift in summer as the foliage yellows. Cure thoroughly in a dry, airy place before use or storage.
