This premium garlic collection brings together Carcassonne Wight, Picardy Wight and Kingsland Wight – three named specialist varieties grown for planting on the Isle of Wight. Rather than a generic mixed pack, you get a deliberately varied combination of hardneck and softneck garlic with different flavours, growing characteristics and keeping qualities.

Carcassonne Wight – Hardneck

An exceptional pink-cloved hardneck with good skin cover, strong flavour and excellent vigour in the UK climate. It originates from the Carcassonne region of south-west France and Catalonia.

Picardy Wight – Softneck

Originating from Picardy in northern France, this specialist softneck is adapted to cooler, wetter conditions and is particularly useful for UK and Irish growers. It is also an excellent keeper when properly cured.

Kingsland Wight – Hardneck

A premium Lautrec-type hardneck with white skin and pink to purple cloves. It has a rich, distinctive flavour and brings a different character to the collection.

Planting Advice

When & Where to Plant

Grow in full sun in fertile, free-draining soil. Garlic benefits from a period of cold, so autumn to early-winter planting is ideal for many varieties; follow the planting period shown in Additional Information for the variety purchased.

Spacing & Depth

Separate bulbs into cloves immediately before planting and leave the papery skin intact.
Plant root end down and pointed end up.
Space cloves about 15cm apart, with around 30cm between rows.
Plant with the tip about 2.5cm below the soil surface.

Heavy Soil & Containers

Garlic dislikes winter waterlogging. Use raised beds, containers or modules where drainage is poor. Containers should be at least around 20–25cm deep and drain freely.

Care

Keep weed-free and water during prolonged dry spells while bulbs are developing, then reduce watering as maturity approaches. Hardneck varieties may produce a flower scape; removing it directs more energy towards the bulb.

Harvest & Storage

Lift when the lower leaves begin to yellow while some upper foliage remains green. Cure thoroughly in a dry, airy place before storage.
