Maris Bard Seed Potatoes
From £6.99
A reliable heavy-cropping First Early with white skin and flesh, semi-dry texture and useful resistance to drought, bruising and damage.
Description
Maris Bard is a dependable First Early that can produce a heavy crop surprisingly early in the season. The oval tubers have white skin and white flesh, with a semi-dry texture that sits between a waxy salad potato and a very floury early.
RHS highlights its reliability and notes useful resistance to drought, damage and bruising. In the kitchen it is particularly good fried or boiled as a salad/new potato, giving it more flexibility than many very early varieties. It is also a strong choice where the aim is an early crop in containers or smaller spaces.

Planting & Growing
Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from March onwards once the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.
Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30cm between tubers and around 60cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.
Variety-specific advice: Chit well and plant from March when conditions allow. Start lifting early for smaller salad potatoes, or leave plants a little longer for a larger crop.
Harvest: Begin checking from early summer; lift progressively when the tubers reach the size you want.
