Planting Advice

When & Where to Plant

Grow in full sun in fertile, free-draining soil. Garlic benefits from a period of cold, so autumn to early-winter planting is ideal for many varieties; follow the planting period shown in Additional Information for the variety purchased.

Spacing & Depth

  • Separate bulbs into cloves immediately before planting and leave the papery skin intact.
  • Plant root end down and pointed end up.
  • Space cloves about 15cm apart, with around 30cm between rows.
  • Plant with the tip about 2.5cm below the soil surface.

Heavy Soil & Containers

Garlic dislikes winter waterlogging. Use raised beds, containers or modules where drainage is poor. Containers should be at least around 20–25cm deep and drain freely.

Care

Keep weed-free and water during prolonged dry spells while bulbs are developing, then reduce watering as maturity approaches. Hardneck varieties may produce a flower scape; removing it directs more energy towards the bulb.

Harvest & Storage

Lift when the lower leaves begin to yellow while some upper foliage remains green. Cure thoroughly in a dry, airy place before storage.
