Fill your plot with a varied crop of overwintering onions.

A great-value collection of large 21/24mm onion sets selected from our autumn range. Choose approximately 130 sets in the 1kg pack or 195 sets in the 1.5kg pack for an earlier summer harvest.

Description

A generous overwintering onion collection for an earlier crop

Plant as the garden quietens down in autumn and give your onions a head start before winter. The sets establish roots in cooler soil, then resume strong growth in spring—often producing usable onions earlier than spring-planted sets.

This collection is designed for growers who want quantity and variety without ordering several separate 500g packs. It is particularly well suited to larger vegetable beds and allotments.

Choose your pack

  • 1kg: approximately 130 large 21/24mm onion sets.
  • 1.5kg: approximately 195 large 21/24mm onion sets.

Counts are approximate because onion sets naturally vary slightly in weight and size.

Varieties in the seasonal selection

Your collection is selected from our current overwintering range and can include:

  • Shakespeare – a dependable brown-skinned overwintering onion producing well-shaped bulbs for everyday kitchen use.
  • Senshyu Yellow – a well-known Japanese overwintering variety valued for reliable early crops of mild yellow onions.
  • Red Baron – richly coloured red onions with crisp flesh, useful raw in salads as well as cooked.
  • Snowball – an attractive white onion offering a milder flavour and a useful contrast to traditional yellow varieties.

The exact combination varies with seasonal availability. The varieties supplied will be identified when your order is packed.

Why choose the collection?

  • Large 21/24mm sets with plenty of stored energy for establishment.
  • A mixed planting rather than one long row of a single onion.
  • Excellent quantities for productive beds, allotments and larger growing areas.
  • Autumn planting spreads the gardening workload and can bring the harvest forward.
  • One convenient order selected from Patch’s current overwintering stock.

Planting position

Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Plant each set with the pointed tip just showing above soil level, allowing approximately 10cm between sets and 25–30cm between rows. Avoid ground that remains waterlogged during winter.

Planting Advice

When & Where to Plant

Plant from September to November so the sets can establish before winter. Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Spacing & Depth

  • Plant sets 10–15cm apart, with 20–30cm between rows.
  • Leave the pointed tip just showing above the soil.
  • Check newly planted sets regularly or protect temporarily from birds until rooted.

Winter Drainage

Overwintering onions dislike sitting in waterlogged soil. On heavy or wet ground, use raised beds, containers or modules and plant out when conditions improve.

Harvest & Storage

Autumn-planted onions generally mature earlier than spring-planted crops. Lift when the foliage yellows and topples, then cure thoroughly before use or storage.
