Sarpo Axona Seed Potatoes
From £6.99
A compact Sarpo maincrop with very strong late-blight resistance, dry fluffy flesh and excellent storage—similar to Mira but often easier to manage in smaller plots.
Description
Sarpo Axona is a close relative of Sarpo Mira and shares the Sarpo family’s strong late-blight resistance. Its plants are more compact than Mira, while the red-skinned tubers are generally more regular in shape and have cream flesh.
Sarpo’s own guidance describes Axona as a dry, fluffy potato for mash, baking and chips, with good flavour and storage well into spring or early summer. It also makes dense growth capable of suppressing weeds. For growers who want Sarpo disease resilience without Mira’s very tall habit and tendency to produce enormous tubers, Axona is an excellent alternative.
Why grow Sarpo Axona?
- Maturity: Maincrop
- Cooking type: Floury
- Texture: Dry, floury and substantial
- Best for: Baking, Chipping, Mashing, Roasting
- Skin: Red
- Flesh: Cream
- Tuber shape: Oval to long oval
Growing note: Check tuber size rather than waiting automatically for complete haulm senescence. Cure sound tubers well; Axona is particularly worthwhile if long storage is part of the plan.

Planting & Growing
Chit seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free place if you want to encourage an earlier start. Plant from late March into April once the soil is workable and conditions are suitable.
Plant approximately 10–15cm deep, allowing about 30–35cm between tubers and around 75cm between rows. Earth up developing shoots to keep tubers covered and maintain an even water supply while tubers are forming.
Variety-specific advice: Check tuber size rather than waiting automatically for complete haulm senescence. Cure sound tubers well; Axona is particularly worthwhile if long storage is part of the plan.
Harvest: Allow a longer season and check tuber development from late summer into autumn.
